Species richness, functional traits and climate interactively affect tree survival in a large forest biodiversity experiment

چکیده

Tree survival affects forest biodiversity, structure and functioning. However, little is known about feedback effects of biodiversity on its dependence functional traits interannual climatic variability. With an individual-based dataset from a large subtropical experiment, we evaluated how species richness, time-dependent covariates affected annual tree rates age 3–12 (years) after planting 39 across diversity gradient 1 to 2, 4, 8 16 species. We found that overall marginally increased with at the plot level, variation among plots within levels. Significant in responses changes these were related conditions. Generally, conservative (evergreen, late-successional thick leaves high carbon nitrogen ratio but low specific leaf area, phosphorus hydraulic conductivity) diversity, yearly precipitation, whereas acquisitive showed opposite responses. Synthesis. Our results indicate interactions between conditions can balance diverse forests. Planting mixtures differ afforestation projects may lead positive loop where maintains together previously reported beneficial ecosystem

Early positive effects of tree species richness on herbivory in a large-scale forest biodiversity experiment influence tree growth

Despite the importance of herbivory for the structure and functioning of species-rich forests, little is known about how herbivory is affected by tree species richness, and more specifically by random vs. non-random species loss. We assessed herbivore damage and its effects on tree growth in the early stage of a large-scale forest biodiversity experiment in subtropical China that features rando...

Tree species richness affects litter production and decomposition rates in a tropical biodiversity experiment

We report data on leaf litter production and decomposition from a manipulative biodiversity experiment with trees in tropical Panama, which has been designed to explore the relationship between tree diversity and ecosystem functioning. A total of 24 plots (2025 m) were established in 2001 using six native tree species, with 1-, 3-, and 6-species mixtures. We estimated litter production during t...

Plant species richness and functional traits affect community stability after a flood event.

Climate change is expected to increase the frequency and magnitude of extreme weather events. It is therefore of major importance to identify the community attributes that confer stability in ecological communities during such events. In June 2013, a flood event affected a plant diversity experiment in Central Europe (Jena, Germany). We assessed the effects of plant species richness, functional...

Functional traits and plasticity in response to light in seedlings of four Iberian forest tree species.

We investigated the differential roles of physiological and morphological features on seedling survivorship along an experimental irradiance gradient in four dominant species of cool temperate-Mediterranean forests (Quercus robur L., Quercus pyrenaica Willd., Pinus sylvestris L. and Pinus pinaster Ait.). The lowest photochemical efficiency (F(v)/F(m) in dark-adapted leaves) was reached in deep ...

Climate-Induced Elevational Range Shifts and Increase in Plant Species Richness in a Himalayan Biodiversity Epicentre

Global average temperature increase during the last century has induced species geographic range shifts and extinctions. Montane floras, in particular, are highly sensitive to climate change and mountains serve as suitable observation sites for tracing climate-induced biological response. The Himalaya constitute an important global biodiversity hotspot, yet studies on species' response to clima...
